May 29, 2014— --AstraZeneca (AZ) today announced that AstraZeneca has agreed to pay a royalty payment of $7.2 million to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). AstraZeneca paid the royalty payment in full for the first quarter of 2011 and the next quarter of 2012. The royalty payment will go into effect on December 1, 2011. The royalty payment was paid by AstraZeneca.
“This agreement is in the best interest of AstraZeneca,” said Dr. David A. Buse, President of AZ. “We’re proud to have achieved this milestone.”
AZ, a global pharmaceutical company, has a large market for prescription drugs that is projected to be worth $13.3 billion in 2012. The company has about 12,500 employees worldwide. The agreement also covers a portion of the cost of a new prescription that has been granted by AZ for its employees.

The FDA will begin approving the drug’s marketing authorization on May 30, 2012, and will also be granted 180-day marketing exclusivity for Crestor®.
